Long Live The New Flesh

videodrome, cronenberg, television, internet

Videodrome, one of the earlier films by mastermind David Cronenberg is just about one of the most bizarre, strange, very strange...can't think of any other synonyms for strange...well, one of the eccentric films I have ever seen. IN A GOOD WAY! It was a perfect combination of science fiction versus sexual fantasy versus a genuine discussion of a relevant issue in society. Yes, some of the dialogue, camerawork and scenes are cheesy, but hey, it was the 80s and I'm sure back then, it would've been a very impacting and revolutionary piece of work.

Brief Plotline:

The film itself is a little confusing to be honest. The main idea throughout was basically saying that television was going to revolutionise humanity by allowing the media to reach new audiences they've never been able to reach and influence the audiences' minds. It was almost a warning film against television and its abilities to control humans. I guess the equivalent now would be the internet...

But yes, the overall story revolves around Max Renn, deliciously portrayed by James Woods. He is the president of a small television channel dedicated to porn, ranging from soft porn to hardcore. Always on the lookout for the 'next big thing', Max one day stumbles upon a new television show called 'videodrome', which had somehow accidentally transmitted to their television station. Max is intrigued by the 'sexual' violence shown in videodrome and is convinced that it will be the next big thing. However, what he doesn't know is that by watching videodrome, he starts to experience hallucinations and crazy dreams. Soon, he is under the control of videodrome and he must find out who is behind it and destroy it before it takes over his mind completely and the minds of the public.

videodrome, cronenberg, television, internet

This film reminded me a little of A Nightmare on Elm Street just for its depiction of reality against illusion. All of his hallucinations were very blurred and intertwined with realism to create a film that always did not fail to surprise me nor confuse me at times. The use of special effects I thought was particularly effective. I thought whoever was their makeup artist did a tremendous job with the 'fake vagina' (you'll get it when you watch it!) and the bubbling videotape. The gore however was never overdone and was a nice treat to an overall tense and well plotted film.

videodrome, cronenberg, television, internet

The plot somehow felt a little forced, with everything being too perfect or too planned. I felt it needed a little more absurdity just to make the final few scenes believable. The use of the television as a communicator was very intelligent and I particularly liked it when the television substituted human flesh. For those who have not seen it, there are several scenes where James Woods' character hallucinates when sees his television set as his girlfriend. He proceeds to feel and touch this television box as if it is a human being, hence blurring television and reality.

videodrome, cronenberg, television, internet

The very very end, I felt, was very nice, having a nice tag line "long live the new flesh" as the motto for Max's vengeance, but I felt the few scenes leading up to that were a little forced just to reach that final end.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. I respect its originality and its ability to convey such a relevant issue in current society in such a daring and subjective manner. Although television has lost its power since when it was first introduced, it still retains so much influence on how we view the world and our opinions. With television being a very passive communicator, where the audience is unable to really respond, I believe the internet has filled in that gap and has allowed audiences to express who they are and their own opinions. However, with that, I think more than ever now, humans want to be different and unique just to feel 'special'. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or not, but for now, just be thankful you're only being mildly brainwashed by the media....!

I give this film 3.5 STARTS OUT OF 5

Dying In A Nightmare

nightmare on elm street, freddy, krueger, wes craven

I'm sad to say that I hadn't watched the classic horror flick A Nightmare on Elm Street until just recently. There was so much momentum building to watching this film that I was sure I was going to be disappointed. It was a joyous moment when half way through the film, i found myself enjoying the content very much and was even surprised at times at the effects and the horror. On top of that, I was also obviously very interested to see Johnny Depp's first feature film debut. All in all, the result was definitely not disappointing.

A Nightmare on Elm Street, a Wes Craven film who also directed the Scream franchise, started the nightmare franchise with a very simple, yet effective idea. If you think about it, your dreams are one of few things we humans cannot control. We don't get the ability to make choices in our dreams...(although some I hear can) and we never decide what our dreams are about. Rather, dreams dictate us and we're utterly and completely hopeless most of the time. Dreams often make us uneasy especially ones that have a darker edge, most commonly known as nightmares. I don't know about everyone else, but I often have dreams about being chased by murderers, but thankfully I always manage to escape. However, I often hear stories from others that they actually die in their dreams. Now, Wes Craven actually came up with the concept of A Nightmare on Elm Street after reading a couple of stories in his local newspaper about some immigrants who died in the middle of a nightmare. Later autopsies revealed no foul play, no physical failures and basically no reason as to why these kids had died except that they had died whilst dreaming. A Nightmare on Elm Street was born.

The villain in Nightmare is Fred Krueger, a child murderer who had been 'killed' by the parents of the victims in the film. Now, Krueger was out for revenge, killing the kids when they're most vulnerable, in their dreams. What follows is a chilling tale of one girl's struggle to defeat Krueger before her and her friends all die.

This film really truly blurred the distinction between reality and dreams. During several sequences, I wasn't quite sure whether the child was asleep or awake or if Freddy had stepped into reality or what in the world was happening. In one scene in particular I that was was confused in was when Johnny Depp's character was sleeping, dreaming about Freddy. Nancy however was still awake, but she received a call anyway from Freddy on her unpluggled phone line.

However confusing that scene was, it did add to the tension of the film by disorienting the audience further. As a horror film, Nightmare was very well executed, starring a very horrific villain as its star and as promising young children as its prey. I also liked the fact that you got to see Freddy loud and clear...and often! I personally hate horror flicks that only show parts of the killer's body and always in shadow. By showing Freddy, burnt and all, it really added to the horror by embedding his skin, his eyes and most importantly his claws into the audiences' minds.

The music as usual was very effective as were the blood squirts and the killing. Overall, the film established tension well, most of the performances were believable and originality was all there. I give this film 4 STARS OUT OF 5. Oh yes, and look out for the 2010 remake by Samuel Bayer. I have reasonable hopes for this film just because Samuel hasn't made a feature yet, so good luck to him and hopefully he doesn't destroy his career before its begun.

Oh Mrs. Robinson

Firstly, can I just say...I now understand that Simpsons episode where Grandpa Simpson drags Mrs Bouvier onto that bus and that song starts playing!!!!! My life's purpose has been fulfilled at last. It was a reference to THE GRADUATE.

The Graduate, a film by the ever so talented Mike Nichols is a story about a young college graduate who returns home with no real ambition and many regrets in life leading up to now. He is upset about where his life is going but is too timid to do anything about it. This film is very much a character driven piece, and the audience is taken on a journey with this young naive man as he goes through a whirlwind journey of strangeness, being seduced by an older woman, falling in love with her daughter and then eventually heading off into the world as clueless about it as he started off. Having said that, the hilarity that comes in between both from the other quirky characters or from the situations he gets himself in is just tantalising.

Dustin Hoffman plays this character to perfection. His shyness towards Mrs. Robinson, the woman who successfully seduces him is sad yet hilarious and his stupidity at times can make you want to hit him on the head and scream "grow some balls!" However, there are also times where he does things to please Mrs. Robinson and in effect, he hurts other characters and can come across as a real jerk. I really didn't know what to expect when I first started watching this movie. I thought it was just going to be a simple story about an affair between an older woman and a much younger man and the effects of that. What I got however was a cinematic masterpiece!

graduate, mrs, robinson, dustin, hoffman

I don't even know where to begin raving about the camerawork used in this film. The cinematography was inspiring beyond belief, utilising techniques I believe was so experimental at the time and I'm sure influencing future cinema. I mean, this film was made in the 1960s and to me, it felt like I was watching a Wes Anderson film or a Spike Jonze film. I was tres tres impressed. I particularly liked the inclusion of zooms. Where it is the norm to discard zooms as amateurish, The Graduate's inclusion of this technique really added to the strange way Ben Braddock (Dustin's character) saw the world. There were also many POV (point of view) shots where the audience is literally seeing the world through the eyes of Ben. They were very effective in making the audience, again, feel what Ben is feeling and experience the world through Ben's mindframe.

graduate, mrs, robinson, dustin, hoffman

The cast in the film was phenomenal. Mrs. Robinson played by Anne Bancroft was such a pleasure. Character wise, she was a cold bitch, but man was her acting convincing. Her natural flair at playing such a manipulative, confident yet seductive woman was the perfect opposite to Ben's fumbling, awkward character.

The humour in the film was very offbeat, often delving into black humour at times. Even though this poor kid is wrapped up in all this chaos, and all to do with this one family, you can't help but laugh at his misfortune and the way he handles it.

graduate, mrs, robinson, dustin, hoffman

I think another reason why I enjoyed this film so much was also because in a way, Ben's character speaks to all students who are completing a degree at the moment or have completed one and are now stuck in a position where they don't know where to go in life now, or are questioning whether accounting or economics is really what they want to dedicate the rest of their lives to. I for one feel very lucky that I can do something I am so in love with, film. But for many others, I'm sure no one jumps for joy every morning before they leave to calculate numbers. Finding a path in life is difficult, especially one that interests you. And then there are all these other factors involved such as income, prestige, and most of all, sustainability.

I haven't seen a film with this originality and flair for a long, long time! I'm giving it 5 STARS OUT OF 5.

Peace.

drag me to hell sam raimi

I was going to review the new Sam Raimi film 'Drag Me To Hell' which I just saw a couple of hours ago, but I just had to get this off my chest....WHY DO TEENAGERS FEEL THE NEED TO REPEAT ALL LINES SAID ON SCREEN, THEN LAUGH OUT LOUD, THEN PROCEED TO CHATTER ABOUT WHAT IS FUNNY ABOUT THE MAIN CHARACTER'S FACE. That will always remain a mystery. I went to watch Drag Me To Hell today, full of anticipation and excitement. Little did I know my experience would've been so deeply tainted by an array of teenage boys and some girls screaming at that same film

Harry Potter Has Feelings?!?!

Howdy all! I just watched the new Harry Potter film and like all others, I'm dedicating a review on this new film in the franchise. Now, although I'm a huge fan of the books, I have not always been as pleased by its cinematic translations especially during the first few. I think it might have been because of the terrible terrible acting from two out of the three child actors and the fact that the films often discarded so much detail the books had that nothing really made much sense and the focus were on all the wrong things. However, with that being said, I still loved the idea of being able to really truly experience the world of Harry Potter and to be able to then on, read the remainder books with a solid image of the characters, the world and the magic

Born To Be A Killer

Natural Born Killers. Holy Cow. That's all I have to say after watching that film. That was one of the most bizarrely shot, psychedelic, thought provoking films I have ever see. This film had everything! Sex, guns, violence, the good, the bad and the ugly! There were subliminal flashes of fire, the devil and other crazy things and the cutting and the colours were dizzying beyond belief. However, despite all this frivolity, the underlying story and themes of Natural Born Killers will stick in my mind for years to come

Psycho...American Style

I'd been putting off watching American Psycho for a while just because I thought it was a tragic remake of a Hitchcock classic. Little did I know that the film almost has nothing to do with the classic and instead is a modern work of art meant to trash and badmouth the workings of modern day society. American Psycho is a comment on consumerism, on obsession, on greed and most importantly on the superficiality of human behaviour especially in the upper class. The film reminded me a lot of Fight Club in its first narrative approach and its stance against buying and selling and buying and selling. The humour in the movie is dark. Darker than I believe any film that I have ever seen. It almost borderlines serious but most of the time, you can't help but laugh at the situation, the intensity and the bizarre characterisation of Patrick Bateman. Christian Bale who played the twisted freak aka Patrick Bateman executed it perfectly, really bringing his psychosis with his emotional detachment with an almost sympathy for what the world has shaped this human into

I watched Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures the other day. It starred a rather young Kate Winslet in her debut film at age 17. Freakishly though, she looked the same as she does now. Same expression on her face, her awkward smirk and her same smooth, ageless face. The film itself was a tremendous achievement by Jackson, having only a very limited budget and choice of actors but managing to create such a strong, tight film with spectacular performances from everyone involved. The film;s subject matter is such a strange one, that even if the film wasn't done well, the subject matter alone would have been enough to draw an audience in. Thankfully, the film itself was as daring and beautiful as the story

Amy Wang

July 7th 2009 06:22
Hey, I took over this blog a couple of weeks ago. Haven't properly introduced myself just yet! I'm Amy, a uni student studying filmmaking in Sydney. I've been the author of all the film reviews so far since 'The Hangover'. I'm a huge fan of Stanley Kubrick and his art. I started a film blog because I'm sick of reviews which only tell you the plot of the film and nothing else. In my reviews, I like to really get into the reasons why the film is a hit or a miss.

Hope you enjoy my continuing reviews of films out in cinemas and on DVD. I'll try to get a trend happening of what films I review, but for now, it's just what ever films that pop out and are screaming for a review

Coco Chanel

Coco Avant Chanel is one of those rare films that really touches your spirit and carries your emotional essence on a journey of strength, love and determination by one strong-willed woman, Coco Chanel. I have always wondered about the woman that started the most famous fashion brand in the world, about how she started it all, about how she was as a person and how she story. This film definitely answers all of those questions regarding who she was as a person even if it is hyperbolised to satisfy/entertain a film audience. It really successfully details Coco Chanel's life from beginning til when she reveals her first fashion collection to the Parisian public, and does so in a convincing and elegant manner
